Cedarburg Quilt Show and Contest 2008 October 11 & 12, 2008

Cedarburg came alive as the Wisconsin Museum of Quilts & Fiber Arts hosted its annual quilt show at the Cedarburg Community Center. Quilters entered their quilts in three different categories for the contest —bed quilts, wall quilts and others, such as art/decorative and home furnishings.

For the first time in the show's history, youth participants were awarded prizes in two age groups—12 and under and 13-18.

Also for the first time, the quilt show colored the streets of downtown Cedarburg with several businesses displaying quilts in their store windows or outside as part of the “Outdoor Quilt Walk.” The Cedarburg Cultural Center also featured quilts.

Another new element of the quilt show was the Quilter's Treasure Chest, where people donated supplies or fabric they no longer wanted, and other quilters could find supplies for their projects.

Making Quilts Today October 8, 2008 - January 11, 2009

Four Wisconsin quilters-- Alicia Avila, Roberta Williams, Nora Rader and Maribeth Schmit-- each with their own distinct style and technique presented their exquisite quilts at this show. Alicia Avila’s quilts exemplify Latin symbols such as profiles and front faces, all done in vibrant colors that signify masks used for rituals in native cultures. Roberta Williams’ style, on the other hand, ranges from traditional to art quilting. Nora Rader’s inspiration is her love of nature, as is evident from her patterns, which she says can be as simple as circles or as complicated as appliqué. An “infatuation with all things textile” is what keeps Maribeth Schmit involved with quilting. Her characteristic bright colors, elaborate borders and simple designs have won her many ribbons and awards even internationally in Indonesia and Luxembourg.

Parallels in Design July 9 - October 5, 2008
The exhibit examined the use of the four different styles of motifs by a variety of fiber arts disciplines-- Botanical, Log Cabin, Geometric and paisely. The display included new and vintage art work. The museum also released "Wisconsin Quilts: A History in Stitches," by Maggi Gordon who was available for the book signing during the Open House on July 13.
Fiber Rennaissance: A Traveling Exhibit of Contemporary Quilts April 9 - July 6, 2008
A showcase of the distinctive art created by members of the Studio Art Quilt Associates, Inc., the exhibit will on tour for two years. Quilted designs were selected by SAQA curator Cheryl Dineen Ferrin, who is a distinguished quilter of large-format portraits in silk and cotton fabrics. The SAQA is a non-profit whose mission is to promote the art quilt through education, exhibitions, professional development and documentation. Founded in 1989 by an initial group of 50 artists, its members now number over 1,450, and include artists, teachers, collectors, gallery owners, museum curators and corporate sponsors.
Exhibit of Needle Felted Quilts, Art Objects and Wearables January 17 - April 6, 2008
Our first exhibit of 2008 featured needle-felted quilts in addition to doll, animal, and vessel sculptures, as well as clothing, hats, purses, and jewelry. It featured works by notable quilters from across the country, who met with visitors at the Exhibition Open House on January 27th, while Curator Luella Doss gave special tours. The shelves of the Fiber Arts Boutique were stacked with handmade items by artists featured at the exhibit, as well as other local fiber artists. Uncover these and many more great finds at the museum's boutique!
