In October, 2007, Terri Kirchener volunteered to quilt the Mariner’s Compass Donor Recognition Quilt.  Using her long arm quilting frame and machine, she created several quilting designs all of which beautifully coordinated with the patchwork compasses and enhanced the overall appearance of the quilt.  To prepare the quilt for the long arm she carefully blocked the quilt so that every corner was perfectly square.  She used a variegated color thread for the quilting.

Once the quilt was in the frame, the quilting required 22 hours to complete. This is an amazingly short time for the complexity and size (11 ft. sq) of this quilt. When the quilting was finished,  Terri applied bindings to match each background color around the center compass.  The quilt was returned in time for the museum to assign a few names to assigned spaces before Luella Doss hand carried it to Houston, Texas for the International Quilt Festival.

At the festiva,l the WQHP was given a prime location for displaying the quilt in the Quilt Exhibition area.  Most times, approximately 30 people at single intervals would be viewing the quilt.  Each group would receive an explanation telling the story of the quilt and the volunteers who created it.  The next appearance of the quilt will be at the Cedarburg Winterfest in the Community Gym.   The quilt was also displayed at Chicago International Quilt Festival at the George Stevens Convention Center in Rosemont, IL from April 11-13 , 2008, where the museum had a booth.    The Mariner’s Compass Recognition Quilt will be on permanent display in our new museum.
